The Triumph of Hope Over Experience? Nope. : )

Jetty's afternoon nap is something of a production. He goes down all ready for sleep, but seems to need some wind-down time once he's in there -- to converse with his stuffies, watch his aquarium, whatever. It's hilarious to listen to him babble. Every so often, if he gets really raucous, I open the door and give him the Stern Mommy Face, whereupon he dives for cover, sticks his thumb in his mouth, and fake sleeps. He's not quite bright enough not to scramble back up when he sees me start to leave. Meanwhile, I'm working hard to maintain Stern Mommy Face instead of cracking up at his mischief.

Today, he really, really wanted to get out of taking his nap. He did some squealing and giggling and finally tried, "MaMaMa? MaMaMa?" over and over. I very nearly caved. But just as I was on my way in (how can you resist that?) there was a brief silence, and then he tried again: "DaDaDa? DADADA???"

At the next brief silence, here's what I found:

Cody in the Playroom/Living Room/Family Room/Dining Room/Great Room

The Learning Puppy never fails to amuse. Ten seconds after this shot he had tackled her to the ground.

Books are still among his favorite toys! We just get the kind with indestructible pages, because he likes to really digest his reading.

Uh-oh. Learning to balance, transferring from the couch to the toybox...

It wasn't me, Mom. Whatever it is, I didn't do it. Cross my heart.

Blueberries for Sal Cody

Last night, Jetty decided blueberries are his most favorite food in the whole wide world (today, of course, he was nonplussed). He just kept cleaning the tray and then looking up at me expectantly. Clearly, not much news on our end, but these were just cute to me. As were his blue lips.

Naptime

So today Jetty did just about the cutest thing ever. He was tired and ready for his nap, but still had to change him and then dispose of his fragrant offering. He was very cranky and kept grunting in the direction of his crib, over which his blankie was draped. He can only have the blanket in his crib, and our little routine at sleep time is that we walk over to the crib, and he reaches down and grabs it, then sticks his thumb through it and sticks the thumb in the mouth. Well, I put him down on the floor so I could go visit the trash can, and when I came back, he had apparently climbed up to grab it and was waiting like this:

And when I went to get the camera, I came back to find this.

Subtle. Real subtle. Best part is? TWO AND A HALF HOUR NAP! A record. And one worth breaking, in my opinion.

Much Ado About...wait...there is Something!

"For there was never yet philosopher
That could endure the toothache patiently."

Well, it's true he wasn't the most patient patient. But you can't blame him. Teeth must really hurt. But yesterday when he woke up, there was something there that wasn't there before...and it is sharp! It's not all the way through, and CJP still wants to chew everything (pizza crust was a huge hit), but the eagle has landed.

If you look really closely, you can sort of see it. Sort of.

Rollin' Along

Hey, is that MY belly? Wow. It's pretty big. No wonder Mommy always giggles when I am just in my diaper. It's bathtime, but I still think I have a few things to chew on and explore....

Ok. Mommy says it's 26 degrees out so it is time for me to get warm. That means....TUBBY!

Baths are SO AWESOME! Do you think I could talk Mommy into letting me stay in here ALL NIGHT? Dad says my fingers are like prunes and I don't like prunes much but I LOVE my pruny fingers!!

Good Night, Moon

Wait, Mommy. You forgot something.

Ok, that's better.

Friday in the Park with Cody

CJP has been feeling a bit under the weather for the past couple of days. But today, the weather turned -- at least outside -- so we had a great sojourn to the park.

Cody discovered woodchips, and I discovered that he has his daddy's fastidious streak. He didn't much like the messiness of it; he got a very distressed look on his face and started doing his "anxious hands."

But the best part of all, as always, was the swing. : )

The Spin Room

Today's entertainment was brought to you by the front-load washer, which is apparently the most captivating thing in the entire universe. Granted, we live in a very small universe, with relatively few appliances. Even so, here are a few shots over a span of about 15 minutes -- no joke.

Understanding v. Obeying

Here's how this conversation went (again):

Cody: Awesome. Mom's not looking. So I can totally climb up on the stool and knock over the recycling. I'm not allowed but it doesn't count if she doesn't see it.

Here goes...

Me: Ahem. CODY JOHN PAUL.
Cody: (Crap! She saw!) Um, hi Mommy!

Cody: I was just coming over to say hi to you! Wasn't doing anything near the recycling!

Honest! Look! Let me distract you with my cuteness!

On the bright side...

...it turns out that everyone cheers up when they put pants on their heads.

Where is it now, the glory and the dream?

Cody is confused. He thought that all you had to do was get born, and then teams from Philadelphia would start winning championships. This is Cody and his sad, sad Dad at the conclusion of the NFC championship game tonight. Oh, the betrayal.

"I love thee to the level of every day's most quiet need, by sun and candlelight."

These are just some random shots from the last couple days. It's hard not to just keep the camera in my hands all day, because every time I turn around, he is doing something new. I swear I'm not really one of those moms who is convinced her child made and ordered the universe, but he has a way of making the mundane glorious.

He reached for blueberries in the grocery store today and started eating them. He suddenly became an expert at pinching cheerios and pieces of turkey between his thumb and pointer finger and shoveling them into his mouth. He starts bleating when he sees his sippy cup, because all of a sudden he knows what to do with it. He can turn the light switch on and off. He spent ten minutes of his bath trying to eat the strap of my watch and then decided to practice spinning around on his butt and drinking out of the cup we use to rinse his hair. And yet, when he's tired, he is still my baby, just wanting to curl up in my arms, drink, and fall asleep.

It's kind of crazy. People told me it would go by fast, but I had no idea. It's bittersweet. But mostly sweet. See exhibits below. : )

Cody was being so "helpful" in the kitchen that I broke out the mixing bowls. So much fun to clang, and as an added bonus, you can see yourself in them.

If you're really quick, you can crawl to the fridge while Mom's back is turned and take stock:

Mmmm. Parsley. But if you're still hungry, you can eat Mom's shoes.

Toys 'R Us

Just random cuteness from playtime.

It turns out it's faster to get to your toys when you overturn the toybox.

Boxed In

Cody knew from Christmas that he is a huge fan of boxes. What he didn't know is that you could get inside, and then Mom can pull you around the house like you're in a speedboat. Awesome. With a capital AWESOME.

Standing Up For Himself

Today's playing was brought to you by, "Now that I can stand, I may never sit again." Well, I should clarify: standing is old news, but standing without needing something low to grip onto is new. Now all he needs is a reason. A wall, a door, whatever. Up he goes! He has been exploring every corner of our place -- I kind of miss the "old days" when he could only pull himself up on the couch or coffee table or his little play table. Suddenly the potential for mischief has shot up.

Hey, what's behind this door?

Awesome! Now I have to figure out how to get in there.

If you push on the door hard enough, it will open and you can crawl in!

Mom and Dad have awesome dressers with cool knobs to pull on!

YESSSS! I have been hoping I would figure this out! Maybe I can tip Felix over and get all wet! Or break my baby monitor! Awesome!

And could you ask for a better way to end the day than to suck on your own toes in the tub? : )
