The year Cody was born, we ventured out to Lee Street in Old Town, which does for Halloween what all those Christmas light people do for Advent. Remember this, back in 2008? How little he was! Here's more…
We returned to Lee Street tonight, much to our communal delight. Emma had three lollipops before we'd gone three blocks! Heaven.
Favorite moment: Emma saw another Tinkerbell, went up and said, "Oh! You are Tinkerbell! I am Tinkerbell, too! I LOVE YOUR COSTUME! You are SO TUTE! Can I HUG YOU!?"
Here's Cody, trailing a Storm Trooper...
Dueling his doppelgänger...
And alongside Old Town's biggest pumpkin.
Which Emma also wanted to hug.
Happy Halloween!
And for a walk down memory lane (Mom), here you go…
Halloween 2009… and more….

Scenes from the Fall
Reading before school (she's deep into the Rainbow Fairy books)
Always in a princess dress...
Oh look! A pumpkin!
Oh NO! I do not want to TOUCH THAT LADY! I am SCARY! (Instead of "I'm scared." : )
At the CMS campout...
At the pumpkin patch...
Digging through the bags of hand-me-downs from Sophie, costumes included!
Cordelia, the self-proclaimed "beach fairy"...
Emma and Princess Fiona!
Happy October!
The Other John Paul the Great
I'm hopelessly overdue. Sorry, Mom.
But real quick: both kids are now in Religious Education on Tuesdays (we used to call it CCD). Cody will be making his first Communion on April 30!
This little one...
"Cody is my godmother's maiden name. Saint John Paul II is a very special saint to my parents. They asked for his prayers for me to born safely."
I just love him, and can't help but think that Saint John Paul the Great is looking down with those twinkling eyes and a big smile.

This little one...
…has become THIS one. It's hard to understand.
As we prepare for All Saints Day, his class has been talking about the significance of names and saints. While I gave the girls a bath tonight, he was downstairs doing his RE homework. Here's what I found."Cody is my godmother's maiden name. Saint John Paul II is a very special saint to my parents. They asked for his prayers for me to born safely."
"He was a great and holy man. He was brilliant, kind, and generous. He loved the church and led it for 26 years. He also loved Mary deeply." And he taped his favorite, well-worn postcard to bring to show his class.

That's you, Daddy!
Shannon will have details on our Columbus Day trip to the beach later. For now, there's this:
Yesterday evening we got home from a long, but uneventful, trip back. Emma asked me to come keep her company in the bathroom. She sat down on her little potty and dropped a deuce. A really big deuce. She opened her legs, peered into the bowl, looked up at me excitedly and said, "That's you, Daddy!"
I shook my head and smiled and said, "No, sweetie. That's poop."
To which she replied, with more excitement, "No! That's YOU!"
She was attempting to make clear that this wasn't a case of misunderstanding or confusion on her part. She was saying that this enormous log of shit was me.
Fortunately SLL walked by, stuck her head in and clarified. Earlier in the day, Emma had dropped another deuce, comprised of one small bit and one medium bit. At which point she told Shannon, "The little one is Emma and the medium one is you, Mommy!"
Sigh.

Before I forget it . . .
Of all the moments from the Alaska cruise, my favorite might have been in Victoria. After having gone on the orca watch, Cody and I returned to the Orca Spirit office, which had a gift shop. Before we had gone out to sea, Cody had selected a stuffy humpback whale as his Victoria keepsake. It was then time to pick our gifts for the girls.
Cody wanted to get them little stuffy orcas. But since we had just learned quite a lot about orcas, he was nervous. This is the conversation that followed:
CJP: Actually, I don't think we should get them orcas.
JVL: Why not?
CJP: Because orcas eat other animals and if we get them they'll try to eat Harbor Seal and Bailey. [Bailey is his stuffy dolphin.]
JVL: Oh no. Remember, only Off-Shore and Transient orcas eat mammals. Resident orcas only eat fish. Never sea mammals.
CJP: And these stuffies are resident orcas?
JVL: Yup.
CJP: Are you sure?
JVL: Absolutely.
CJP: That's no good. I have a stuffed fish, too. I can't have the girls' orcas trying to eat her.
JVL: You don't have to worry. Your fish is a trout and Resident orcas only eat salmon--salmon and no other fish. Your fish doesn't even have to worry about Humpback eating her, because remember, humpback whales have very narrow throats and only eat very tiny fish.
CJP: And you're sure that these are Resident orcas?
JVL: Oh yes. Just look at their eyes. They're very kind and Resident orcas are the kindest orcas. They live in big pods and are very social. These orcas are clearly social.
Here, Cody thought for a moment. And then he announced, "Great. Let's get them, then. The girls will love them. And I'll explain to my other stuffies that they don't have anything to worry about because the new orcas are residents."
It's important to understand that this entire conversation was held in complete seriousness.
