This week Cody has been progressing quickly with his surfing. He's mastered bodyboarding:
(Note the position of his arms. He informed me that this was him "deploying my rudders.")
Then, I brought him out on my longboard. We got out to the break and then I had him jump on the front of the board so I could slide in right behind him and push us off to catch the wave. He loved it.
That was yesterday. Today, I suggested that he might want to try standing up when we did this, and do some surfing for real. This has been, by the way, my plan since he was born: To start him with bodyboarding, get him used to the basics of catching a wave and feeling the motion, and then to get him to learn to stand up by having him on the longboard with me, so I could keep it reasonably steady and also be right there to coach him.
Sometimes, dreams come true:
He's already practicing on his own board, now that he understands the feeling. And about half the time he's managing to get to his feet.
I'm so proud of him.
Meanwhile, the next little surfer girl is ready to rock and roll:
